When to plant strawberries in Texas?

In Texas, strawberries are typically planted in the fall to allow them to establish roots before the cool winter months. Depending on your region within Texas, the best time to plant strawberries is between late September and mid-October. This gives the plants plenty of time to settle into the soil, develop strong roots, and be ready to produce fruit in the early spring. Texas is known for its warm climate, and while this is generally favorable for growing strawberries, it’s important to avoid the extreme heat of summer when establishing new plants.

Strawberries in Texas prefer full sun and well-drained, slightly acidic soil with a pH of 5.5-6.8. If you’re growing strawberries in containers or raised beds, be sure to use a nutrient-rich soil mix. Before planting, mix in BigAss Berries fertilizer to give the strawberries the essential nutrients they need for root development and overall plant health. Apply 1 scoop (1 tablespoon) of fertilizer per square foot of garden bed, or adjust the amount for containers according to the container size (1 tablespoon for a 12-inch pot). The organic blend of BigAss Berries will ensure the plants get the nutrients they need throughout their growth cycle.

Although BigAss Berries fertilizer works for all types of berries, you can look forward to the upcoming release of Happy Strawberry fertilizer, specifically formulated for strawberry plants. This will provide an even more targeted nutrient boost for growing strawberries in Texas, particularly beneficial for the fall planting season.

In terms of watering, strawberries in Texas need consistent moisture, especially during the dry, warm fall months. Mulching around the plants helps retain moisture and keeps the soil temperature stable. Apply a layer of straw mulch around the plants to protect them from sudden temperature fluctuations and to prevent weed growth. Regular fertilization with BigAss Berries every 6-8 weeks will ensure healthy growth and a bountiful harvest in the spring.
