When to fertilize blueberry bushes?

Fertilizing blueberry bushes at the correct time is crucial for optimal plant health and fruit production. Timing fertilization properly ensures that your blueberry bushes receive the nutrients they need during their most active growth periods, leading to stronger plants and higher yields of fruit. Blueberry bushes are unique in their nutrient needs, requiring fertilizers that maintain an acidic soil environment while delivering a balanced supply of essential nutrients.

Early Spring (Pre-Growth Stage): The first application of fertilizer should be in early spring, typically in March or April, depending on your region's climate. At this time, the plants are still in dormancy or just beginning to show signs of new growth. This is when they need a boost of nutrients to support the upcoming flush of leaves, flowers, and fruit production. Fertilizing at this stage ensures that the plants have the energy and nutrients needed for the growing season ahead. Use BigAss Berries fertilizer, which is specially formulated for blueberries and other berry plants, to deliver the right balance of nutrients.

Mid-Spring to Early Summer (Flowering and Fruiting Stage): Once your blueberry bushes begin to flower and set fruit, typically in late spring or early summer, it’s time for another round of fertilization. Blueberries are heavy feeders, especially during their fruiting stage, and regular fertilization every 6-8 weeks is necessary to support fruit development. Applying fertilizer during this period ensures that the blueberries grow to their full size and develop the best flavor. Fertilizing regularly also helps the plant recover from the energy expenditure required to produce fruit.

Late Summer (Post-Harvest): By late summer, the growing season is winding down, and blueberries are starting to prepare for dormancy. It’s important to stop fertilizing at this time, usually in August or September. Fertilizing too late in the season can encourage new growth, which won’t have time to harden off before winter. This can leave the plant vulnerable to frost damage. Instead, let the plant naturally transition into dormancy without further nutrient boosts.

Fertilizer Application for Blueberries: Whether you are growing blueberries in containers or directly in the ground, using the right amount of fertilizer is important. For container-grown blueberry bushes:

  • Use half a scoop (1-2 tsp or 5-10 ml) of BigAss Berries fertilizer for an 8” container.
  • Use 1 scoop (1 tbsp or 15 ml) for a 12” container.
  • Use 1.5 scoops (1.5 tbsp or 22.5 ml) for a 16” container.

For blueberries planted in garden beds or the ground, apply 1 scoop (1 tbsp or 15 ml) per square foot of garden bed or growing area. You can either mix the fertilizer lightly into the soil or sprinkle it on top (top-dress) around the base of the plants, ensuring that it is evenly spread.

After applying fertilizer, water the blueberry bushes thoroughly. Watering helps the fertilizer penetrate the soil and reach the plant’s root zone, where it can be absorbed effectively. Repeat the fertilization process every 6-8 weeks through the growing season to keep the plants healthy and productive.
