When to fertilizer berries?

Fertilizing blueberries at the right time is essential for their growth, health, and fruit production. Blueberries are acid-loving plants that require regular feeding to produce bountiful crops of sweet, flavorful fruit. The best time to fertilize blueberries is early in the growing season, typically in early spring, when the plants begin to emerge from dormancy and start new growth.

Early Spring Fertilization: The most important time to fertilize blueberry bushes is in early spring, right as the buds begin to swell. In most regions, this is around March or April. At this point, the blueberry plants are preparing to produce leaves, flowers, and, eventually, fruit. Fertilizing at this stage ensures the plants have the nutrients they need to support vigorous growth, flower production, and fruit set. Apply a fertilizer that is specially formulated for acid-loving plants, like BigAss Berries, to provide the right balance of nutrients.

Mid-Spring and Early Summer Fertilization: After the initial spring fertilization, continue feeding your blueberry bushes every 6-8 weeks throughout the growing season. This will keep the plants well-nourished as they enter their flowering and fruiting phases. By mid-spring, the blueberry flowers will have started to form, and the plants will need additional nutrients to develop healthy fruit. Fertilizing in mid-spring and early summer helps ensure that the berries grow large and sweet, and it also supports the overall health of the plant.

Late Summer: Stop fertilizing blueberry plants by late summer, typically in August or September. At this point, the plants should begin transitioning into dormancy, and fertilizing too late in the season can promote new growth that may not have time to harden off before the first frost. Encouraging late-season growth can weaken the plant and make it more susceptible to cold damage during the winter months.

How to Apply Fertilizer: For container-grown blueberry plants, use BigAss Berries fertilizer according to the following guidelines:

  • Use half a scoop (1-2 tsp or 5-10 ml) for an 8” container.
  • Use 1 scoop (1 tbsp or 15 ml) for a 12” container.
  • Use 1.5 scoops (1.5 tbsp or 22.5 ml) for a 16” container.

For blueberries planted in garden beds or in the ground, apply 1 scoop (1 tbsp or 15 ml) per square foot of garden bed or soil surface. Fertilizer can be mixed lightly into the soil or simply sprinkled (top-dressed) around the base of the plants. After applying, always water the plants thoroughly to ensure that the fertilizer reaches the root zone and begins to nourish the plant.

Best Practices for Fertilizing Blueberries: Fertilizing blueberries at the right time and with the right product, like BigAss Berries, will help ensure that your plants grow strong, produce abundant fruit, and maintain their health over the years. Regular feeding throughout the growing season is key to keeping your plants vigorous and productive.
